Reflection on Kowloon Virtual Trip
I'm going to write a reflection on this virtual visit on ‘The walled city of Kowloon’ and talk about how important it is the knowledge of the built environment and abiding building law to ensure healthy, safe, and positive life quality. We are also to choose a scene or situation from any references that have given an impact to us and express how we feel about it.
The Kowloon walled city is erected without architectural or engineering participation, it is constructed on the principle of squatters' rights, with random construction on spots of available land by whoever who got there first. The building typology of the walled city made leap from two-to three-storey residential structures to taller ,six-to seven- storey ones. It does not have a proper foundations or piling, they use materials of dubious quality, ignored conventional mechanical and electrical standards, lacked proper circulation and fire egress, access to daylight fresh air, water supply or water disposal, and certainly didn't enjoy adequate maintenance once constructed. The buildings and living quarters do not get enough sunlight on a daily basis, making the environment dark and moist. There was also no rubbish collection. Proper sewage and lighting facilities were ignored. Some buildings is leaning against their neighbours, some were impossible narrow, many were undefined as to their party walls.
MY FEELINGS ON ONE OF THE MEMORABLE SCENE
In this scene, when the cameraman walked down the dark hallways of the Walled City of Kowloon. The hallways the daylight shrank month by month and it gave me an anxious feeling as if someone could attack the videographer anytime. The hallways were so narrow and dark that I also felt claustrophobic just looking at it.
